About

Sonjuk Island was first recorded as Sonjuk-do (損竹島) in the Joseon-era Sujeong Sillok, in an entry for 1587 (year 20 of King Seonjo) that describes the death of General Lee Daewon. After Admiral Yi Sun-sin became Left Naval Commander of Jeolla in 1591, the island came to be called Sondae-do (損大島), meaning 'the loss of a great man.' In 1914 it was moved from Dolsan County to Yeosu County and renamed Sonjuk-do (巽竹島), the name it has today. Sonjuk Village in Samsan-myeon, at the Gwanmun pass, is well suited to family camping and swimming. Each year the village holds its traditional Hwajeon picnic at Jijimjae pass, along with a full-moon offering ritual, village rites and dragon-king rites.
